Research

Pete Burgess is an experienced researcher in the fields of international human resource management and employee relations.

He spent 18 years as an editor in the international department of
Incomes Data Services (IDS), one of the UK’s leading sources of information on employment and pay issues. While at IDS he edited and managed a series of reference publications on employment law and HRM practice: IDS International Employment Guides.

Pete has also been engaged in a wide range of contract research, consultancy and information provision. Current and past clients include:

  • international pay and labour cost research for leading automotive manufacturers in the UK and Germany,
  • the Irish Employers Association (IBEC),
  • Labour Ministry of North-Rhine Westphalia (Germany),
  • UK trade unions,
  • Hans-Böckler-Stiftung, Germany
  • European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU)
  • XpertHR (XpertHR)
  • the Ethical Trading Initiative.

From 2010-2018, he was a Research Fellow at the Business School, University of Greenwich, working on research projects on employment tribunals in the UK and abroad, trade union developments in Germany, and other topics. From 2015-2018 he jointly led a project on worker lay judges in Great Britain, Germany and France (see associated publications on the next page).

Pete has extensive experience in speaking at events on international employment topics for a variety of audiences in the UK and abroad, including refereed papers at academic conferences.
